'Electricity Prepaid meter system soon in Moreh'

AS done in Imphal, Prepaid meter system will be enforced soon in the areas of Moreh too, says N.Kunjakishor, executive engineer, electricity Dept.
Chandel.
Speaking elaborately on rural electrification as a resource person in the technical session of the second day of Bharat Nirman public information campaign organized by the PIB, Imphal held today at the hall of Hill Tribal Council, Moreh, he further said that as the enforcement of pre paid meter system here calls for construction of a new office building, the department has conducted a field survey where the new building would be constructed and a report thereof has been submitted.
He said that the department has taken up all the required actions regarding underground cable works in Chandel district and it is in the starting stage now.
The underground cable works being taken up by one agency from Dimapur will complete within two years time.
Out of the total numbers of 410 villages in Chandel district, 310 villages have been electrified so far while the dept is taking up rigorous effort to electrify the 39 un electrified villages.
Moreover, the department has submitted a report regarding electrification of new 56 villages which remained excluded from the electrification scheme.
The team of 12 finance commission assured to electrify these villages, he pointed out.
Expressing serious concern over the non- payment habit of taxes on the part of the people of the state, he said that the power presently consumed by our people is purchased from others.
Manipur Govt.has only 8 MW of its own.
However, for Manipur, the total demand of power in peak load is 140 MW out of which 132 MW is directly purchased from North east power grid spending crores of rupees by the govt.Chandel alone needs 11 MW.
"The expenditure on power purchase has to be made up by the taxes paid by the people so that Government can again provide power to the people.
If people do not pay taxes, how long will the Government be able to provide power to its people under deficit", he asked.
The executive engineer stressed on Energy saving and appealed the people regarding avoidance from wastage of power in vain and unauthorized connection.
He also appealed the people present there to use more CFL bulbs as they consume less power.
Talking about Franchisee programme of the government of India, he further said that franchisee programme which aims to manage electricity with public participation has been initiated in Chandel district.
Under this program, a committee comprise of the representatives from the side of Local MLA, DC, village chief, Electricity dept will be responsible regarding management of electricity in the village.
The village representatives will repair the defects, operation and maintenance of line and reporting to the Dept.
In every village, meters will be fixed.
Out of the total tax collection, 5 percent of it would be given to the village workers.
Dept has proposed to increase the present rate of 5 percent by 20 percent as done in Kolkata.
