Decrying the resolution taken up during State Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister N Biren Singh on January 15 to rename Wangjing Lamding Municipal Council (WLMC) into Wangjing Municipal Council (WMC), JAC against the renaming of Wangjing-Lamding Municipal Council to Wangjing Municipal Council, Lamding organised a sit in protest at Wangjing-Lamding Keithel today.
Later, a memorandum was submitted to Thoubal DC, Haobam Roshita regarding the issue.
Several placards that read "WLMC should not be renamed", "Withdraw Cabinet decision", "MLA Brojen, stop creating tension between Wangjing and Lamding populace", "State Government should not implement one sided policy" were used among others.The memorandum submitted to the DC mentioned that one Autonomous Municipal Council for Lamding must be established before renaming the Council.
It also said that Lamding denizen are not against separating WMC from WLMC but the registration of the Council must be given to Lamding as all the assets are with them.
The State Government must not give assent to the initiatives of Wangjing Tentha MLA P Brojen to create tension between the populace of the two places and must held responsible for all the unwanted incidents if work against the aspiration of the public, it cautioned.
Speaking by the sideline of the protest, one of the protester said that the decision of State Cabinet to remove Lamding from the Council so as to make it only for the Wangjing is condemnable.
The people of the two places shared a close bond and have been living in harmony for the past many years but the decision to remove Lamding from WLMC has created apprehension among its populace, he added.
While the Lamding populace started commencing their meeting, the populace of Wangjing carried out a publicity campaign for meeting by using a loudspeaker but the situation was controlled by the timely intervention of Thoubal police.
