Imphal, January 21 2019:
A one day awareness programme on the use of Flying - 8 Loom, a loom developed by one Andreas Moller of Frankfurt (Germany), was organised at Kontha community hall under the aegis of Khurkhul Makha Ideal Women Society and Sobha Fabric today.
Apart from being cheaper compared to the looms normally used by the Manipuri women, Flying-8 Loom is also noiseless during operation, is compact (occupies less space) and puts less strain on the body when used for long hours.
The traditional looms used by the women of the State generally produced around 4 to 5 metres of fabric per day but in the case of the Flying-8 Loom, it can produce around three times the quantity of the traditional looms ie, around 12 to 13 metres of fabric per day, which will help improve the income generating capabilities of the women.
The event, which was participated by around 150 women weavers, was attended by DIC Imphal West Project Manager N Nilabantajit, Khurkhul Gram Panchayat Pradhan Irungbam Shanta Singh, Neela Handlooms Shillong proprietor Jame Dhakar as well as instructors from Shillong namely Saipyrkhat Majaw and Khraw Lynkhoi as the presidium members.
Speaking at the event, Neela Handlooms proprietor Jame Dhakar assured the women weavers that the fabric produced using the specific loom will not have any problems in finding a market and further assured that he would make necessary arrangements for giving Certain market benefits as well.
It may be mentioned that Flying-8 Loom was introduced for the first time in the country in Shillong and Manipur is the second to get such a loom.
Khurkhul Makha Ideal Women Society is the first to implement the said loom in the State and till now, the society has already procured around 27 of the Flying - 8 Looms.
