Shillong, January 16 2015 :
The Bajengdoba Block Committee (BBC) of the National People's Party (NPP) on Friday has demanded that the Dr Mukul Sangma led MUA II Government of Meghalaya immediately hold elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) .
"We demand the immediate holding of the Council elections as per the schedule and restoration of the rule of law and installation of a popular Executive Committee in GHADC at the earliest," NPP-BBC general secretary Marwein N Sangma said.
In a press release issued on Friday, Sangma said that the BBC strongly condemns the 'unconstitutional' decision of the State Government to extend the term of the GHADC by another six months.
Opining that the Congress party is running the GHADC with defected MDCs from the NPP and the erstwhile NCP, Sangma said, "The Congress is holding on to power in GHADC through backdoor as they are clinging on to power even when the term of the Council has expired a year ago.
"It is time that people are given the opportunity to elect their new popular representatives of their choice and get rid of the undeserving unfriendly MDCs that are enjoying the public funds at the cost of the public," Sangma asserted.
Sangma also informed that the NPP has decided on a massive enrolment drive with the objective of enrolling at least 15,000 primary members into the party in 2015 besides revamping the existing primary units.
The party also decided to form election working committees for the District Council polling stations under Bajengdoba, he said.
