Imphal, July 03 2021:
Asserting that the poverty-stricken people can no longer endure the lockdown imposed for containing the spread of Covid-19 virus, All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) has appealed to the state government to take up special measures for helping the crisis affected people so that they could contribute in the fight against the pandemic by staying at home.
In a statement, AMUCO assistant general secretary MM Thambou said that during their relief operation they came across several poor families, who are no longer in a position to endure the lockdown and maintain SOPs due to extreme poverty.
Those who are facing shortage of foods cannot afford to buy face masks and hand sanitisers.
The rice provided by the government is not enough to last for a month.
Considering this fact, the government should take up adequate measures to identify such families and provide them assistance, AMUCO suggested.
It then appealed to local clubs, Meira Paibi and local bodies to prioritise such families in the vaccination programme.
It also urged the government to accord special priority to such group of people.
AMUCO set a target to distribute food items to 10,000 families and they are trying to achieve the target by coordinating with different organisations.
Organisations under AMUCO are also taking up vaccination programmes with support from department concerned as vaccination is the only lasting solution in the fight against the pandemic.
Increasing the rate of vaccination is a must in order to lift the curfew, the statement said while urging the public to come out for vaccination and help in fighting the pandemic.
On Saturday, AMUCO in association with Roadside Vendors' Welfare Association and Northern United Clubs' Organisation (NUCO), an apex body of 64 clubs, distributed food items to 94 families in different localities.
So far, food items have been distributed to 4,886 families including women vendors.
Leaders of the two organisations actively participated in the relief programme, it added.
