One-day awareness programme for PWDs held at Jiri

A one day awareness programme on "Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016", jointly organized by office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, GoM and Achievement of Rising Maidan (ARM), Lakhipur, Jiribam, was held at the cultural hall of Institute for Children with Disabilities (ICD), Lakhipur ward no 9, Jiribam at around 11 am today.
The programme was attended by Dr RK Kumarjit Singh, Commissioner for person with Disabilities, GoM; H Ranibala Devi, president, ARM, Lakhipur, Jiribam; and S Lalmani, Assistant Inspector of School, Jiribam as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
The programme began with the lighting of candle by the chief guest, president and guest of honour while O Anita Devi, secretary, ICD, Jiribam delivered the welcome and keynote address.
Speaking at the occasion, chief guest Dr RK Kumarjit Singh said that victims of acid attack are now considered as one of persons with disabilities same as the persons born with physical defects adding that Govt has recognized 21 different types of disabilities to formulate schemes for their support.
Emphasing on the importance of having disability certificate by the differently abled persons to reap the benefit of various welfare schemes given by the Govt, the chief guest stated that cases of disabled persons not getting its entitled benefit reported from different parts of Manipur in the electronic media in recent past is due to the culture of concealing by the family that one of their family members is handicapped physically or mentally resulting in non-issuance of disability certificate to such disabled persons.
As such, it is of no use to hide such cases, he added and urged the public to use the 5% quota reserved for persons with disability in Govt jobs.
President of the function, H Ranibala Devi, urged all the persons with disabilities from Jiribam to keep in touch with ARM and ICD for easy facilitation of all Govt benefits released for the PWDs.
Guest of honour, S Lalmani, Assistant Inspector of School, Jiribam encouraged the parents, guardians and relatives of disabled persons to treat them at par just like other normal people while giving equal opportunities in terms of education and other skills so that their hidden potential can be nurtured to become a successful and independent person that can motivate and encourage other persons with disabilities by sharing their struggle.
