Ruling Congress suffered a humiliating defeat in the Konthoujam bye-poll.
Trinamool Congress opens its account in state assembly.
The Trinamool Congress' candidate Konthoujam Sarat defeated his nearest rival Dr Sapam Ranjan of Congress by 655 votes in the bye-election to Konthoujam Assembly constituency with the counting of votes concluded.
While Sarat, backed by oppositions like MPP and BJP, secured a total of 9592 votes Ranjan came close by getting 8937 votes.
Of the total 22360 votes casted independent candidate Khangembam Ranjit got 3831 votes.
Of the total 28 polling stations, Sarat led in 15 while Ranjan in 11 polling stations.
Ranjit led in only two polling stations.
By-election to the seat was held on February 14.The by-poll was necessitated following the death of Congress MLA and Speaker Dr Sapam Budhichandra who was the father of Dr Ranjan in September last year.
With the declaration of election of Sarat, the Trinamool Congress which its unit in Manipur set up only last year has opened its account.
The party celebrates the victory with other opposition parties who backed Sharat in the election.

With one seat goes to Trinamool, the strength of the ruling Congress-led Secular Progressive Front ministry has reduced 35 seats (Congress 31 and CPI 4) in the 60-member Manipur legislative assembly.
Of the rest 24 seats, the opposition Manipur People's Party (MPP) has 5, Rashtriya Janata Dal 3, National People's Party 3, Nationalist Congress Party 4 and independents 10 .
A clash that erupted among the workers of Trinamool Congress and Congress in the aftermath of the election result left one injured.
The Trinamool Congress worker sustained injury when Congress workers attacked to a procession to celebrate the victory.
Police fired several rounds of guns in the air to disperse the mob.
The situation was brought under control, a police officer said.
The incident occurred around 1.30 pm at Konthoujasm Mamang Leikai and the injured worker has been identified as Leitongbam Lairenjao (45) of Khumbong Awang Leikai.
With injury in his back of head, he has been admitted at RIMS hospital.
