Imphal, July 13, 2013:
Reiterating its demand that an all community market complex by developed at the site where Apex Cooperative Society existed, Ima Panthoibi Street Vendors' Union today cautioned that it would launch intense agitation if the Government of Manipur goes ahead with its plan to build a tribal hostel at the said site, which is located opposite of Khuman Lampak Bus Terminus.
Pointing out that the location is not suitable for students to stay on account of the area being densely populated the located close to the main road, Union advisor Y Indrani Devi also questioned on the need for hostel construction as similar facility is already in place at the nearby Adimjati complex.
With over 200 street vendors of different communities plying their trade on the pavement for years it would be huge relief if these small-time traders are provided a proper place to sustain livelihood, she opined while adding that having a market facility will also mean decongesting the roadside.
Members of the Union also staged a sit-in-demonstrations on the Dingku Road pavement to highlight their plight and protest the tribal hostel construction project.
