Imphal, July 26 2018:
A meeting of the State Board for Wildlife held this afternoon with Chief Minister N Biren in the chair resolved to set up a bird sanctuary at Thinungei village near Loktak lake in Bishnupur district.
As per a decision adopted at the meeting held at the Chief Minister's Secretariat, a bird sanctuary would be set up at the eastern portion of Thinungei adjoining Loktak lake so as to protect migratory birds as well as other birds.
Taking serious note of the direct purchase of land from villagers by Assam Rifles within Yangnoupokpi Wildlife Sanctuary, N Biren stated that Assam Rifles should be allowed to purchase lands from the villages directly only with due approval of the State Government in compliance with the Forest Conservation Act 1980.The meeting also decided to protect monkeys found at Mahabali forest and CI College, Bishnupur.
The meeting authorised authorities concerned to take up protective measures for endangered animal species like Yongmu, Shafu, Yong Ikaithibi, Nongin and Sorbol.
It also agreed to appoint one honorary Wildlife Warden for every forest range.
While the Board for Wildlife gave approval to initiate due process for declaring Pumlen Pat as a Sangai conservation reserve, the Chief Minister advised officials concerned to rope in local people as members of management committees.
The board further agreed to five wildlife clearance to NHIDCL for construction of two roads, informed a source.
