Imphal, December 22 2011:
Despite police claim that the slain 40-year old Laishram Ranbir alias Eshen of Uchiwa Awang leikai was involved in the abduction and subsequent killing of Soram Ibomcha and his son Yaipu alias Geetchandra, family members of the victim have asserted that Ranbir was an innocent person.
They also insisted that Ranbir's body would not be claimed until and unless police commandos involved in gunning down Ranbir are pulled up and punished according to law.
A public meeting organised by the JAC formed in connection with the killing of Ranbir also resolved to demand adequate compensation to the victim's family.
Submission of a memorandum to the Chief Minister and not claiming the body till the JAC's demands are translated into action were the other decisions taken at the meeting held this afternoon at Uchiwa awang Leikai Leirak Achouba ground.
Speakers at the meeting contended that Ranbir was killed in a fake encounter stage-managed by Imphal east and West district police commandos.
Apart from accusing the commando personnel of slaying Ranbir with the intention to rob some money he possessed, they also contended that the victim was made the scapegoat to project the incident as a successful operation by the police commandos in the killing of Ibomcha and Yaipu.
Police yesterday claimed that one 9 mm pistol and two live rounds were recovered from Ranbir's possession.
Police also contended that Ranbir was slain in an encounter at Narankonjin on December 20 midnight.
