Imphal, March 19 2013:
A sit-in-protest was staged today at Keirao Khunou Salam Lamkhai to denounce alleged thrashing of one Elangbam Bimol (34) s/o Elangbam Amuba of Keirao Bitra Lairembi Leikai by Iril police personnel.
Speaking to newspersons on the sidelines of the protest demonstration, Bimol's mother Lakshmi stated that inspite of her son's earlier association with an armed outfit, he had severed all ties with banned organisations since about 2003 .
Leading a normal life, Bimol got married and used to work in a motor workshop besides taking up part-time masonry job to sustain the family's livelihood, said the mother.
At around 4 am today, some locals saw a team of Irilbung police commandos (No.8) picking up Bimol from home and driving away in a white colour Maruti Gypsy consequent to which Keirao Gram Panchayat pradhan M Romeshchandra along with some locals went to enquire on Bimol's whereabouts at Irilbung police station, narrated the mother.
While police personnel manning the entry gate insisted that no arrest of Bimol's description was made by the police, persistence by pradhan Romeshchandra eventually resulting in the release of Bimol from the police station at around 5.45 am.
Meanwhile, locals quoted Bimol as saying that soon after arrest he was taken to the nearby Keirao Awangching where he was subjected to severe thrashing by the police team without any justifiable reason.
Besides subjecting him to third-degree methods, Bimol complained of acute pain in the chest and ears in addition to bruise marks on the facial area.
