Imphal, June 06 2018:
Taking serious note of the closure of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Regional Campus Manipur (IGNTU-RCM) for over a month by its students' union, the Manipur Legislative Assembly Hill Areas Committee (HAC) has decided to question the regional Director and Director-in-charge of the university.
The issue has been listed in the agenda of HAC meeting scheduled on June 8, informed a source.
IGNTU-RCM located at Makhan was opened in 2009 under IGNTU Amarkantak.
The regional campus now exists just for name's sake with little infrastructure.
Even though the regional campus was primarily set up for tribal students, it does not follow the reservation policy properly, said the source.
Out of five departments opened at the regional campus, two departments namely Tribal Studies and Sociology do not have permanent faculties and they are being run by guest faculties.
Taking strong exception to the authority's failure to take up any redressal measures even though all the problems and shortage were apprised to them, the students union locked the regional campus since May 3.The students union further prevented the authorities from holding admission tests of different departments on May 5 and 6.Meanwhile, the HAC has intimated the IGNTU-RCM Director and Director-in-charge to come to a meeting scheduled at 12 noon of June 8.Given the restive situation prevailing within the regional campus, the HAC is likely to issue certain instructions to the authorities concerned, conveyed the source.
Some office bearers of the IGNTU-RCM Students' Union said that they held a meeting with the VC on May 29.Even though the VC assured that the grievances of students would be addressed soon, nothing has been done on ground till date, they decried.
They said that the university's authority has been allowed to open just one room of the administrative block from June 6 to 9 in response to their appeal to give them three days' time for documentation works related to construction of a temporary hostel.
Except for this, the university is totally closed.
As assured earlier by the university's authority to give a written assurance by June 9 to address the shortages and shortfalls of the regional campus, the students have been waiting for the written assurance, they said.
In case the written assurance is not received by the particular date, more intense modes of agitation would follow, they added.
