Imphal, June 06 2018:
Asserting that it would be wrong to presume that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill would not affect Manipur, JD-U State unit president Hangkhanpao Taithul has declared that the party would oppose the Bill.
Speaking to media persons at their New Checkon office today, Hangkhanpao decried Chief Minister N Biren's statement that the Bill will do no harm to Manipur.
The people as well as the Government should not commit the blunder of taking the Bill casually.
JD-U State unit was planning to hold a protest demonstration against the Bill today in front of the party office but the plan has been aborted as parry officials could not meet the Imphal East SP.
Nonetheless, the party is planning to hold a protest demonstration against the Bill on June 13, he said.
Even as Central leaders of the party who came to the State to attend a political conference held on May 20 expressed keen desire to meet the Chief Minister and the party's State leaders sought an appointment with the Chief Minister but the Chief Minister's office gave no appointment, Hangkhanpao Taithul said.
He pointed out that JD-U is also an alliance of the NDA.
He also highlighted the need to put in place stringent security measures along National Highways in order to check illegal immigration.
He further questioned the State Government's silence when National Sports University, Manipur University and Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Regional Campus Manipur have been caught in a restive situation.
The State Government cannot simply overlook these issues just because these institutes are under the Central Government, he said.
Noting that the ongoing cease work strike by State Government employees has resulted in immense difficulties to all the citizens, Hangkhanpao asked whether the State Government ever apprised the issue of 7th Pay to the Central Government.
Saying that it has been almost one year since majority of Churachandpur ADC Members moved a no confidence motion against the Chairman, he urged the Government to settle the matter at the earliest.
It would not be right to let people suffer on account of disagreement among BJP Members of the ADC, he added.
