Imphal, October 05 2017:
Taking serious note of the State's fragile geological conditions, frequent floods in the valley and sinking of road surfaces in hill areas which severely damage roads and highways in the State, PWD Chief Engineer Nongmaithem Noren has asserted that application of geotechnical textiles in road construction can effectively address these problems .
Speaking to media persons at his office today, Noren said that geotechnical textile was first used in Manipur on Tiddim Road as a pilot project .
A section of Tiddim Road was constructed out of Rs five crore sanctioned by the Ministry of Textiles for construction of roads using geotechnical textiles in the North East region .
Although it has been 18 months since Tiddim Road was repaired/constructed, there is little pothole and the road has not worn out.
This can be attributed to application of geotechnical textiles in the process of road construction, remarked the Chief Engineer .
Application of geotechnical textiles prevents road surface from absorbing underground water and it makes roads more durable .
Geotechnical textiles also helps in reducing sinking of road surface in hill areas and damages done by heavy rains.
Application of geotechnical textiles in the construction of roads and highways, particularly in hill areas would make the roads and highways more durable, Noren said .
Geotechnical textiles is being used in the construction of roads from Torbung to Nachoupanthong and Nachoupanthong to Malom oil depot .
Moreover, geotechnical textiles is used in 18 road construction projects taken up under PMGSY, he informed .
Further, geotechnical textiles would be applied in the construction of Khongjom canal, he added .
Notably, PWD Chief Engineer N Noren would participate in a workshop on 'Uses of Geotechnical Textiles in North East Region' which would be held on October 7 at the Ahmedabad Textiles Industry Research Association.
