The rally which was mostly participated by women members of three VLFs, passed Pheijaleitong, Sairom Leirak, Beni Leirak and reached NH 102 before heading for Manipur University gate and concluding at SEVA Club.
The people carried placards with message like 'Lets reduce plastic usage', 'Lets replace plastic with paper or other alternatives', 'Lets stop burning plastic' etc.
They also picked up plastic wastes found on the roadside during the rally.
Speaking during the meeting following the rally, MPCB scientist C Kh Tomba said that plastic wastes will be recycled and used in road construction in Manipur and in this regard, MPCB has informed PWD and MSRRDA.
He explained that after the recycled plastic is used for making value added products, the wastes or by product will be used in the road construction.
There are currently 4 plastic waste collection centres, 3 partial recycle units and 4 direct recycle units, he informed.
He then appealed to the people of Thongju to reduce plastic usage and to instead rely more on paper or other environment friendly alternatives.
He appealed to the people to discard the plastic properly and also urged them not to burn plastic wastes as well as it emits poisonous gases.
Kh Tomba said that as per the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, plastic Producers Importers and Brand Owners (PIBOs) should also be responsible for collecting the plastics they produced.
If the PIBOs deliver the collected plastic wastes to the recycle plant, they can get around Rs 13/14 per kg but if the recycle unit collects the waste, then they will get only Rs 8/9 per kg, he explained.
He continued that for Thongju, YIS Enterprises has agreed to collect the plastic wastes.
