Imphal, June 05 2011:
Retaining wall of the bridge connecting Kongba Keithel and Kongba Nandeibam Leikai located within Thongju Assembly constituency in Imphal East district collapsed this afternoon.
The newly constructed bridge, locally known as Kongba Thong Macha was surrounded by retaining walls on all the four directions.
The south-western wall suddenly collapsed this afternoon at about 3.30 .
Construction work of the bridge started around a year back to replace the earlier wooden bridge.
It is just five days after earth has been put in following construction of the retaining wall to fill the gap when the wall caved in this afternoon.
Local people commented that the wall collapsed because of not maintaining proper quality when it was constructed.
It is also reported that the wall on the north-eastern side has been de-linked from the bridge.
Contract for constructing the bridge was taken by one James of Ningomthong and Ngouba of Kyamgei.
Though no work order has been issued for the contract work, execution of the contract work started at the instruction of local MLA Bijoy Koijam, said one contractor.
