Imphal, June 05 2011:
An open discussion session held today in Modern College has resolved to oppose the Government's plan to shift the college somewhere else in order to create space for expansion of JNIMS.
The open discussion session was organised by the Co-ordinating Committee of Founder Members, Alumni and Students of Modern College.
The meeting further resolved that the college should be kept untouched at its present location.
It also agreed on approaching the Government to withdraw the Cabinet decision about shifting Modern College.
It further decided to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister with the same request at the earliest possible time.
The open session also unanimously agreed on taking recourse to various modes of agitation together with student bodies and other civil organisations in case the Government refuses to listen to the appeal and chooses to go ahead with the Cabinet decision.
Speaking in the open discussion, founder member A Jotin said that Modern College is one of the best colleges in Imphal East district.
Saying that around 1000 students are studying in the college at present, Jotin asserted that it would not be a wise step to shift the college somewhere just to make space for upgrading JNIMS.
The college will have no future if 16.18 acres are acquired by the Government from the college campus for construction of JNIMS infrastructure.
It would be tantamount to upsetting the career of more than 1000 students.
Founder Principal A Rabichandra pointed out that development of a society rests on a sound education system.
At a time when the education system needs strengthening, taking over the college campus in the name of development cannot be a rational step, he said.
The discussion session was also participated by ex-Minister Tomba and vice-chairman of the coordinating committee L Ibochou.
