Imphal, April 22:
In a significant ruling, the Imphal bench of the Gauhati High Court has ruled that if any fertile land is affected beyond use by the Loktak Hydro Electric Project then due compensation should be paid to the affected parties.
The Court also directed that an inquiry be conducted to assess the extent of the damage, if any.
The order was issued by the HC on March 15 following a petition filed by the secretary of the Integrated Joint Farming Co-operative Society.
The HC also ruled that the exercise should be completed within six months time.
The respondents in the case include the State of Manipur, Commissioner (Power), Commissioner (Revenue), Chief Engineer of Loktak Hydro Electric Project and the National Hydro Electric Project Corporation.
Advocate N Surendrajit who appeared on behalf of the petitioner said that in 1992 the State Assembly constituted a House Committee to examine the extent of the damage caused to the fertile land, when the affected people claimed compensation for their affected land.
