'Expedite airport expansion works'

Tourism Parliamentary Secretary M Prithviraj has urged the Union Tourism Ministry to expedite the works of expansion of the Imphal Airport soon.
Speaking at the formal inaugural function of the International Tourism Mart held at Guwahati today, M Prithviraj said, in view of enabling expansion of the Imphal airport, additional land has been acquired and handed over to the Airports Authority of India.
However, there has been little visible progress on the proposed expansion of the airport, he added.
He requested the Tourism Ministry to impress upon the Civil Aviation Ministry to advise the Airports Authority of India to expediate expansion works soon.
Prithviraj also urged the Ministry of External Affairs to issue Visa to Myanmarese nationals who come to Manipur via Moreh for medical treatment.
Manipur which has premier institutes like Regional Institute of Medical Sciences and Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences has a rich expertise in the field of medical science and huge potential in tourism with its famous Loktak Lake and Keibul Lamjao National Park etc, he added.
Saying that Manipur Government is preparing project proposals on tourism, the Parliamentary Secretary further urged the Union Tourism Ministry to approve these proposals.
Although, the International Tourism Mart was kick started yesterday, the mart was formally inaugurated in the presence of Assam Governor Janaki Ballav Patnaik and Union Tourism Minister Chiranjeevi today.
State Tourism Director Geoffrey and Tourism Commissioner Rajesh also attended the function.
Cultural items presented by the troupes of Manipur also mesmerised the gathering including many foreign delegates.
A short documentary on tourism potentials of Manipur was also screened after the inaugural function.
