Lamka, October 31:
The adamant stand adopted by Okram Ibobi Singh-led congress government in setting up the NIT at residential patta land of Langol and Lamphelpat despite strong opposition from the local residents and numerous lobbying made by the CDSU to confer the institute to Churachandpur has resulted in scheduling a public meeting here on November 3.A communique issued in this regard by the JAC for Protection of Residential Areas and Patta lands in Langol, Lamphelpat, Imphal and Churachandpur District Students' Union said, the construction of NIT at Langol and Lamphelpat will displace thousands of people in general and tribals in particular from their homesteads.
Besides, the demands made by CDSU that has offered two sites in the district for constructing the same were meant to practically encourage tribal students in Science and Maths and to distribute major development schemes equally in the hills and the valley 'if Churachandpur is assumed as part and partial of Manipur,' it added.
Against all these backdrop, and the state government still hesitant to consider the cause and future of Churachandpur district students, CDSU and the JAC has initiated such a meeting, it said.
The general public, intellectuals, philanthropic organisations, student bodies, community and public leaders, and interested individuals are urged to participate in the public meeting.
