International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed across the State

Imphal, June 26 2016: As observed across the world, inmates of Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa took part in the observation of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking which was organized by the authority concerned in collaboration with Nirvana Foundation.

Around 100 inmates participated in the programme held under the universal theme "Listen First" .

The theme is an initiative to increase support for prevention of drug use 1987.The observation seeks to raise awareness of the fact that drug use prevention based on science.

It is thus an effective investment in the well being of the children and youth, families and communities, stated secretary of Nirvana Foundation S Sobhna.

Emphasizing the role taken by UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Sobhna stated that UNODC has been actively involved in launching campaigns to mobilize support for drug control.

UNODC often teams up with other organizations and encourages people to actively take part in such campaigns.

It is also a day to reaffirms our commitment to the global war on substance abuse.

The observance was instituted by the United Nations General Assembly on Dec 7, 1987.The observation seeks to raise awareness of the fact that drug use prevention, based on science is an effective investment in the wellbeing of our children and youth, families and communities.

The day as an event is celebrated worldwide with much conscious fervour to make people aware and emphasize the hazards of drug addiction and illegal trafficking.

A problem which is a major restraint to humanity and a poison to the well-being of the youth in particular poses greater problems to the socio-economic and political stability of a Nation, Sobhna added.

Superintendent of Police, Central Jail Phanitphang stated that illicit drug trafficking is the third largest practised illegal business across the globe.

With increase in drug or substance abuse, there is direct increase in number of crimes.

Chances of contracting HIV/AIDS are higher among drug users and abusers.

He urged the inmates not to destroy themselves with drugs but rather be a messenger to make Manipur a drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking free State.

A large number of students and members of local clubs and organisations of Lilong area today took out an awareness and motorcycle rally to observe the International Day Against Drug Abuse and illicit Trafficking.

The rally was organised by 6 AR of 9 Sector AR under the aegis of IGAR(S) Hqs in collaboration with local organisations.

Led by 6 AR Lilong Post Commander Major L Tony and Anti-Social Prevention Action Committee, Lilong president Md Subhaluddin Shah, the rally flagged off at 6 AR Post and proceeded towards Lilong Keithel while the motorcycle rallyists proceeded towards Lilong Turel Ahanbi.

The rally concluded at the starting point.

Md Subhaluddin said that Lilong is considered as illegal drug trading zone.

People of Lilong should realize the devastating effects of such activities and collectively work to put an end to such destructive lifestyle.

International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed by Relief Centre for the welfare of Differently Abled Persons, Manipur and Northern Disabilities Institute at Loitang Leikinthabi today.

Organised under the theme "Listen First", the programme was graced by Dr Th Chandramani Singh, former Chief Resource Persons, CTEL, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education, Govt of India, O Birkumar Singh, joint secretary, Relief Centre for the Welfare of Differently Abled Persons and S Inaobi Singh, secretary, Northern Disability Institute as presidium members.

NCC Group Hqs, Imphal has also observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking by organising a route march along Thangmeiband-Manipur Assembly road today.

Lecture programme was also organised which was attended by Dr K Komolini Devi, Additional Director of Health Services, Government of Manipur, Dr H Angoumacha Singh, SP, Health Services, Brig GM Sankar, Group Commander, NCC Group HQs, Imphal and Lt Col SN Thakur, Office Commanding, 65 Manipur Girls(I) Coy, NCC, Imphal.

Noney Battalion of Loktak Brigade under the aegis of Red Shield Division has celebrated the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking today at L Hengjol village by organising educational camp against drug abuse.

The medical team of the battalion also conducted medical camp and distributed free medicines.

All Assam Rifles Units under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) have jointly observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking by organising awareness programmes in Keithelmanbi, Somsai, Pallel, Kakching and other different places.

Major General VS Sreenivas, VSM, IGAR (South) urged the people to work together against substance abuse and illicit trafficking.

Narcotics Control Bureau, Imphal in co-ordination with the Welfare Club, Sagolband Amudon also observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at Sagolband community hall by organsing an awareness programme.

The Social Welfare Officer, Saitu Gamphazol, Sadar Hills, Senapati district has also observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in collaboration with BroadWay Ministry, Saikul Hill Town at the premises of Social Welfare Office today.
