District Network Committee of UNMM organised a consultative meeting on International Humanitarian Law at TTA hall in Ukhrul today.
Speaking at the meeting as resource person, UNMM Secretary U Nobokishore said that AFSPA is being imposed in the North East States on the pretext of countering insurgency.
Prolonged campaign demanding repeal of the draconian Act has been sidelined, Nobikishore said and added that NSCN (IM) leader TH Muivah hailing from Ukhrul was the first person who raised the issue of AFSPA at UN.
He said that State police commando was set up without Cabinet decision or State Assembly resolution and the force is now involving in many heinous crimes.
Rape and atrocities are war crimes and these are to be complained to the UN, he added.
Regarding Irom Chanu Sharmila's campaign, Nobokishore expressed concern that the anti-AFSPA campaigner has been charge sheeted under IPC 309 amounting to attempt to suicide.
TNL president Artax A Shimray alleged that the State Government has failed to ensure right to life and property to its people.
He also spoke at length on human rights violation cases happening in Ukhrul district.
Nobokishore said that Rashida Manju's report on human rights violation done by both State and non-State actors would be submitted to UN soon.
Human rights activist Chingya Luithui and T Ningreichon also spoke at the meeting.
