Imphal, April 27 2017:
Appropriate legal action will be taken up against tweo senior journalists for making "irresponsible" and "derogatory" remarks against former Advocate Generals of Manipur during a news analysis on All India Radio Imphal and in an electronic news channel.
This was conveyed by Yumnam Nimolchand, vice-president of High Court Bar Association, Manipur (HCBAM) during a press conference held at the association's office today afternoon.
He said that advocates of the State and HCBAM strongly condemn the allegations levelled against the former Advocate Generals by the two senior journalists during a news discussion on April 25 and a news analysis on April 25 with regard to the proposed appointment of the Advocate General of Manipur.
Nimolchand contended that the "defamatory" remarks amount to defamation of the legal community of the State and added that Advocate General is a Constitutional post, which is closely associated with members of Bar associations on legal matters.
He maintained that they have been demanding the authority concerned to appoint a competent lawyer from the State as the Advocate General of Manipur and not from outside.
Accusign the two senior journalists of maligning the image of all the former Advocate Generals of Manipur in the news analysis, Nimol-chand said that five out of the nine former Advocate Generals of the State have passed away while the remaining are holding the post of Justice and Chief Justice in different High Courts of the country.
He informed that in connection with the allegations, HCBAM convened a meeting yesterday wherein certain resolutions were adopted.
The meeting unanimously resolved to condemn the defamatory remarks in the strongest terms and constitute a committee of eight members to be headed by RK Nokulsana as the chairman.
It also resolved to chalk out course of action to be taken up against the allegations within 10 days, he added.
