Question hour : Gaikhangam details duties of cops

Prevention
and detection of crime and
maintenance of law and order
are the primary duties of
Manipur Police Department,
stated Deputy Chief Minister
and Home Minister
Gaikhangam in the State
Assembly today.
Saying that police have
been halting even bullock-
carts apart from
motor-vehicles carrying sands
and stones, MLA Th
Shyamkumar asked the Home
Minister to define the number
of law enforcing agencies
functioning under the Home
Department and their duties.
Responding to the query,
Gaikhangam stated that police
were sometimes assigned du-
ties which were different from
their normal duties.
He then appealed to all the
people to give information and
evidence if police personnel
are found performing duties
not assigned to them.
Responding to a question
raised by Th Bishwajit and K
Shyam regarding the dam-
ages done to Ima Keithels by
the earthquake of January 4,
Chief Minister O Ibobi stated
that the damages were exam-
ined by two expert teams, one
hired by the State Govern-
ment and another sent by the
Government of India.
Moreover, a team of IIT
Guwahati collected samples
of the damaged Ima Keithels
for laboratory tests.
Neces-
sary measures would be taken
up based on the report of the
laboratory tests, Ibobi in-
formed the House.
Altogether 13 different
works were taken up at
Moreh for border area devel-
opment under the 13th
Finance Commission, Ibobi
who also holds Planning
portfolio stated in reply to a query raised by Kh Joykishan.
For Central Sponsored Schemes (CSS), utilization certifi-
cates may be sent if the sanctioned amounts have been
deposited in the accounts of implementing agencies.
Nonethe-
less, the projects/schemes should be completed, Ibobi
continued.
There are 17 persons in the State who have been given
licences for 9 mm pistols on the recommendation of the
Ministry of Home Affairs, Home Minister Gaikhangam in-
formed the House while responding to a question put up by
Th Bishwajit.
