Thoubal, October 21 2013:
Waithou Phunal Khunjao Maring village celebrated the 364th anniversary of its establishment today.
Thanga AC MLA T Mangibabu and Tengnoupal AC MLA DK Korungthang attended the function as chief guest and function president respectively.
Assistant Commissioner of Taxes, Ranendra Nandeibam, social worker Gopen Thongram and Village Authority executives also sat on the dais as dignitaries.
Speaking at the occasion, T Mangibabu said that the colourful cultural items presented at the function indicated the importance of preserving culture, tradition and identity.
However, no community must give communal touch in preserving their culture and tradition, he added.
Mangibabu said that there were some misunderstandings among the people of different communities of Manipur due to adoption of different religions during monarchy.
The MLA also called on the people of the State to strengthen unity forgetting the past mistakes and misunderstandings.
DK Korungthang while speaking at the occasion said that culture is the mother of every community.
Culture does not mean traditional dance and songs alone, he said and added that indigenous religion, rituals and traditional way of building houses also have close affinity with culture.
With the advent of modern culture and Christianity, people of every community in Manipur have forgotten many indigenous traditions left behind by forefathers.
Saying that no unwanted incident happened in the past although young boys and girls were not restricted by their parents, Korungthang said that the crime rate is too high these days although different measures have been taken up.
It indicates moral degradation and lack of discipline among the people of current generation, the MLA observed.
Hoisting of village flag, erection of memorial stone, presentation of cultural items and hunting of bull were the main attractions of the celebration.
