Imphal, April 19 2019:
Manipur People's Party (MPP) has alleged that the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) has tarnished the purity of the country's democracy.
Speaking to media persons at MPP office at Mapan Kangjeibung today, the party president as well as its candidate in the Inner Parliamentary Constituency, O Jugindro said that the overall reputation of democracy has been tainted by the constant malfunctioning of EVMs as well as other inconveniences posed by the machine.
He explained that the EVM at 22/30 Wangoi Polling Station did not work for a long time during yesterday's poll.
This led to some issues between the Presiding Officer and the voters, he said claiming that he himself pacified the people and brought the situation under control.
The Presiding Officer then relayed to the RO that the Polling Station was closed, he added.
However, he alleged that while he went to other Polling Stations, it was found that polling had resumed in the said Polling Station without any prior information to him.
On the other hand, he claimed that he received news regarding widespread use of money power to influence the voters to back the National parties.
Jugindro reminded that before 1990, such unfair practice during elections were unheard of and added that it is high time to clean the society of such practices for the betterment of all.
