Imphal, September 16 2021:
Shri Shri Bal Mukunda Dev Music College Students' Union, Government Dance College Students' Union and Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy Students' Union have urged the State Government to look into the lapses at Manipur University of Culture (MUC) before upgrading the same to a Central University.
In a joint statement, the three student unions stated that not a single college/institute is affiliated to MUC to date.
Saying that the students of the above colleges have been demanding that they be allowed to get admission for MA course at MUC, the statement urged the Government to do the needful at the earliest.
It further stated that upgrading the MUC to a Central University will have little to no meaning if the lapses are not addressed.
Asking why only 94 students are enrolled at the varsity which has 11 departments, the student unions contended that some of the departments were opened on vested interest.
It added that not making Shri Shri Bal Mukunda Dev Music College, Government Dance College, Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy and Imphal Art College which are considered the 'backbone of Manipur Culture' constituent colleges of MUC is disappointing.
MUC was established in 2015 with a special focus on these three institutes, the student unions said and cautioned that the varsity might vanish even if upgraded to a Central University if the lapses are not addressed.
The student unions, on the other hand, lauded Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba for demanding upgradation of MUC at the recent session of the Parliament and expressed desire for him to look into the lapses at the varsity too.
