Imphal, January 21 2015:
A mass enrolment campaign was launched today at Thoubal Kshetri Leikai by ex-candidate O Indira, Zilla Parishad Member Md Abdul Latif and social worker L Basanta under the aegis of BJP Thoubal Mandal.
Meanwhile National membership in-charge and BJP National vice-president Dr Dinesh Sharma has nominated Prof Gangmumei Kamei as the State's membership in-charge and M Ashinikumar as co-membership in-charge.
Speaking at the gathering BJP National executive member Sh Shantikumar said that rooms which can create confusion in the ongoing enrolment drive should be left unattended.
There is no directive from the party's National leadership that due approval of the party's State office and Mandals concerned should be obtained for the party office bearers, MPs, MLAs and National executive members to organise membership enrolment campaigns, Shantikumar asserted.
Claiming that he was directed by National leaders to organise enrolment campaigns, Shantikumar remarked that some people threatened to initiate disciplinary action if anyone was organising enrolment drives without approval of the party's State office.
They said so out of ignorance, he added.
People who are registered with other political parties, people with criminal precedents and people who are mentally unsound are not eligible for enrolment in BJP.
As for the people who enrol themselves online, their identities would be verified later, Shantikumar said.
Oinam Indira, after resigning from BJP, contested the last Assembly election as an independent candidate.
"Even as I resigned from the party, many National leaders told me not to abandon the party totally", Indira said.
"Following the return of NDA Government at the Centre, I re-joined BJP through Prakash Javadekar", she added.
