The Agriculture Minister Ph Parijat has informed of the Government actively pursuing a project on production of organic manure in order to reduce reliance upon chemical fertilisers in agricultural activities by the State farmers.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration programme on �Improvement of soil health affected by chemicals cum evaluation programme through field demonstration� at Khonghampat Mantri leikai yesterday, the Minister conveyed of the State Government having sent project proposals to the North Eastern Council and Union Ministry of Agriculture.
Reminding the gathering that inspite of gradual population growth there is no change in geographical area, Ph Parijat emphasised on proper utilisation of available land, plantation of crops suitable to the soil texture and stress on high yielding crop varieties.
Plantation of food crops without dependence on chemicals should not be overlooked, he added.
In his presidential address, MLA of Lamshang Assembly Constituency W Brajabidhu said plans are afoot to establish a solid waste management plant to produce organic manure at Lokchao area for which 300 persons would be selected from the assembly constituency for training stint at Shillong.
Presenting the welcome address, Agriculture Officer (Chemical) Ph Rajendra Singh announced the Department of Agriculture�s endeavours to cover the entire state with similar programmes aimed at creating mass awareness on utility and benefit of organic manure.
Highlighting that among the North Eastern States Manipur has the dubious distinction of relying on chemical fertilizers in agricultural purpose, Ph Rajendra said the Department is committed towards conducting periodical soil testing and replenish soil texture with organic and bio-fertilizers at the Department�s expense.
