The second State Women�s conference organised by All Manipur Democratic Women�s Assn (AMDWA) commenced from today at the State Youth Centre, Khuman Lampak here.
Dean of Social Sciences, Manipur University Prof Ksh Bimola Devi, president of AMDWA M Landhoni Devi and Rajya Sabha MP and vice president of All India Democratic Women�s Assn (AIDWA) Sharla Maheswari attended the inaugural function of the two-day conference as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking at the occasion, Sharla Maheswari appreciated the courage and boldness of Manipur womenfolk in rising their voice against injustice and oppression.
Manipuri women could be set an example for other womenfolk fighting for their rightful place in society, she observed.
She also made special mentioned of Irom Chanu Sharmila who has been on fast unto death for the last many years demanding removal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from Manipur.
In her speech, Bimola stressed on the need for setting up a State Commission for Women to address the problems being faced by women in Manipur.
Around 200 women delegates coming from different parts of the State and all walks of life are taking part in the conference.
Various issues related to women in society would be discussed during the conference and resolution taken to intensify the movement for up- liftment of women.
