Imphal, September 04:
Taking pot shots at the Congress led UPA Government, CPI MP and president of All India Kisan Sabha CK Chandrapan today said that instead of working out policies for the upliftment of the poorer section of society, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is obsessed with the Indo-US nuclear deal.
Speaking at the Irabot Month Celebration function at Iboyaima Shuman Leela Shanglen today, the CPI MP said that the UPA Government was formed with outside support from the Left parties after drawing up a Common Minimum Programme about 4 and half years back.
The Left parties decided to withdraw support after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh moved the trust vote motion to ink the US nuclear deal, said Chandrapan and added that the Congress had also gone against the CMP.
It was with the support of the Left that the UPA could implement the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme as well the Right to Information Act, said the MP and claimed that the NREGS is primarily aimed to improve the lot of the poorer section of society.
Instead of charting out policies for the benefits of the poorer section of society, the Prime Minister is more intent on pursuing the nuclear deal with the US which will not benefit the people in any way, he claimed.
The Samajwadi Party which bailed out the Congress in the trust vote was at one point of time a bitter critic of the UPA, said the CPI and MP and recalled how it had strongly opposed the Bill for 33 pc reservation for women in Parliament.
This is political opportunism.
Even today' the UPA Government has not been able to produce the inquiry report of the last minute exclusion of L Monika Devi from the Beijing squad, said Chandrapan and added that even today it is not clear when Parliament will be convened.
The MP asked the people to watch if and when Parliament is convened.
On Jana Neta Hijam Irabot, Chandrapan said that he was a true communist who sacrificed everything for his land and people.
He was a champion of the poor and exploited, said the MP and added during his life time he was able to bring in a lot of new changes.
President of All India Trade Congress Pramod Gogoi, Chairman of Central Committee M Ibohai, State Secretary L Iboyaima and Selection Committee president Ph Parijat also spoke on the life and contributions of Irabot.
