As part of the programme to beautify and preserve the historic Kangla fort, process of clearing and digging up the inner Kangla moat is underway in full swing.
As many as three excavators and two tippers are being engaged in digging and clearing the inner moat.
The northern side and parts of the western side of the U shaped inner moat have been cleared by using heavy machineries.
Manipur Police Housing Corporation, which has been entrusted with the task of clearing and digging up the inner moat started work from the last week of April, said a source from the State Archaeology Department.
The approximate length of the moat will be 3000 feet while the breadth will be about 140 feet, said the source adding that the digging and dealing work is expected to wrap up within ten months time.
The picture of Kangla as it was in its ancient days will emerge once the development work at the inner moat is completed.
A wall will also soon come up at the Kekrupat side of Kangla, said the source and added work order for the same has been issued.
Kangla Fort Board, which was constituted to look into the development and preservation of the historic fort has suggested the construction of two Kangla Shas which are to be installed at the entrance gate of the Uttara.
As recommended by the Board, process to construct a Pakhangba temple, conservation of the Govindajee temple and identification of the age old trees inside Kangla has started.
The identification of the trees species inside the fort is being conducted by a team headed by a Professor of Botany of DM College of Science.
Proposal to plant indigenous medicinal plants inside the Fort has also been mooted, said the source.
