Imphal, October 14, 2013:
As observed annually since ancient time, the ritual 'Kwak tanba was performed at Sana Konung (Royal Palace) here today.
Speaking to news persons, Samjetsabam Kondumba, Maiba Hanba of Uttra Shanglen said that Kwak tanba ceremony has been observed on the 10th of Manipuri lunar month 'Mera' at Sana Konung since 2000 years back.
The occasion was earlier known as 'Loidam kumsaba'.
"However, it came to be known and observed as Kwak tanba since 33 AD.
Earlier, a bird called 'Nongoubi (Pheasant)' was used in the ritual and its flight direction was observed to determine or forcast good or bad outcome", he said and added that the ritual remains the same despite the name changed.
The Maiba Hanba continued, what changes in the ritual is the sound (made to chase the bird) which was earlier produced by using bamboo, is now produced by using fire crackers.
As the State titular king Leishemba Sanajaoba was unwell, he could not perform the entire ritual like did every year.
He only took part in the ritual performed at Sana Konung front lounge and the remaining rituals were performed by Angom Amuba, the Angom King.
