Major Bob Khathing deserves bigger recognition, says Ram Muivah

Ukhrul, February 20 2023: Ukhrul AC MLA Ram Muivah has categorically said that late Major Bob Khathing deserves bigger recognition from the country.

He was speaking at the inaugural function of the 9th edition of Assam Rifles Major Bob Khathing Tournament and observance of his 111th birth anniversary at Ukhrul.

Addressing the gathering, Ram said late Bob Khathing Ralengnao was a legendary hero having a colourful and elaborative legacy of service to the Nation.

His services were not confined to a particular area, he said.

He was pioneer in education for Tangkhul community, served as an army officer, Administrator, diplomat and a political officer, he said The greatest achievement of Bob Khathing was the conquest of Tawang without any bloodshed and deserved India's biggest civilian award, he noted.

The MLA also expressed gratitude to the Assam Rifles for hosting a sports meet in the name of Bob Khathing.

Meanwhile, DIG 10 sector Somsai, Ukhrul Vaibhah Shinde in his welcome speech highlighted that the main objective of organising the district level sport in the name of Major Bob Khathing is to keep alive his contributions to the Nation.

Bob Khathing was a distinguished and respected leader in Indian history, his contribution to armed forces and diplomacy has left an undeniable mark, and continued to inspire the young generation, Shinde said.

Bob Khathing, born on February 28, 1912 at Ukhrul, was instrumental in the defeat of the Japanese army, he recalled.

Bob Khathing also executed a historic mission.

Under his command, Tawang was brought under Indian administrative control and for this, Bob Khathing was posthumously conferred Arunachal Ratna recently, he added.

His legacy and unwavering commitment have inspired many young people to take up the course of National service, he said.

MLA Ram Muivah inaugurated the sports meet by cutting ribbon in the presence of Ukhrul DC, Krishna Kumar; SP Ningsem Vashum; Commandant 35, AR Manoj Shinde and Tangkhul CSO leaders.

The sporting event which will include men's football, women's volleyball and baby football league will culminate with the unveiling of Major Bob Khathing statue on 27 February at Ukhrul.

The tournament is being organised by Somsai Battalion of 10 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR (South) and saw a glittering opening ceremony filled with entertainment programmes such as folk dance, pipe band show, Nepali dance and musical pieces from several artistes.

The ceremonial lamp was lit by renowned footballer Reisangmi Vashum.

The first football match of the tournament was played between Hunphun Phungcham Football Association ( HPGA) and St Joseph Football Club at district ground, Wino Bazar Ukhrul.
