GC CRPF see off MUVANLAI in 5 goal thriller

Imphal, February 06 2021: The 11th edition of Shaheed Manoranjan Singh Memorial Football Tournament was kicked off today at S AI Sports Complex, Imphal.

The State level open football tournament organised by Manipur and Nagaland Sector CRPF in memory of late Ng Manoranjan Singh, Assistant Commandant from Yurembam Makha Leikai who sacrificed his life while fighting Naxalites in Chhattisgarh in 2009 was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister, Yumnam Joykumar as the chief guest.

The function was also attended by Ng Memcha, mother of the Shaheed Manoranjan; senior police officers; senior officers of CRPF; boxer Laishram Sarita (Arjuna Awardee and former world champion); Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee Oinam Bembem (footballer), other dignitaries, media persons, youth and children of local area.

Randeep Datta, IGP M&N Sector CRPF gave the welcome speech and gave an insight of the bravery of Late Ng Manoranjan Singh, Asstt Comdt.

The Deputy Chief Minister also offered tribute to the late officer and presented a shawl to Ng Memcha.

The chief guest praised the CRPF for organizing this tournament in the memory of the local martyr, said a statement Commandant of 143 Bn CRPF who is also the president of the organising committee.

In the opening match of the 28 team tournament conducted on a knock-out basis with the assistance of AMFA and IWDFA, GC CRPF edged out MUVANLAI, Sadar Hills by 3-2 goals in a nip and tuck encounter.

With MUVANLAI dominating the earlier proceedings, Lunginthang Kipgen drew first blood in the 13th minute but GC CRPF pulled level in the 23 rd minute with Luntinlal Zou finding the target.

With the morale boosting leveller, GC CRPF started to take control of the game and it was in the 39th minute that Elminhao Kilong broke the deadlock to help the CRPF team enter into the break with a 2-1 lead.

MUVANLAI struggled to claw back into the game after the restart but to their disappointment, Jet Lee scored a fine goal to give Gr CRPF a 3-1 lead.

With a dominating 2 goal lead, GC CRPF seemed to rest back towards the latter part and off a fine effort, Lunginthang Kipgen fired home his second goal to reduce the margin.

It was an end to end affair afterward as GC CRPF held on to their lead and MUVANLAI put up diligent efforts to settle the difference.

Despite the effort, GC CRPF cruised home 3-2 to advance into the next round.
