After an agitation call followed by inclement weather forced postponement of the 54th Sir Churachand Singh KCSI CBE Memorial Football Tournament for some days the competition resumed today at Khuman lampak Main stadium where AMOFA (Moirang), KSC (Lambulane) and YWC, Thambalkhong scored contrasting victories.
KSC scripted an upset win over former champion NEROCA, Shangakpam to advance into the pre-quarter final round of the prestigious competition with a 4-2 win via the tie-breaker.
With the match, marked by rough tackling and six yellow card bookings as well as two send-offs, ending in a goalless stalemate at the end of regulation period, penalty shoot-out was applied during which Mahesh Rai, L Jonathan, Thenlal Lhungdim and Helun Haokip succeeded for the Lambulane side while only Ng Tomarjit and S Heman managed to the beat the KSC custodian, who also saved two attempts by the rivals.
Earlier, in the day's opening match which was also decided through penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw, AMOFA overcame TRUGPU, Nambol 5-4 with Ch Shibajit, K Premananda, M Anand and L Kirankumar converted from the spot.
G Anthony Kabui, N sushil and L Gobin were the TRUGPU scorers during the shoot-out.
The match had ended at one goal apiece when A Herojit's attempted clearance from a Kh kiran shot deflected into the TRUGPU.
N Dhananjoy leveled the score for the Nambol side in the 36th minute.
The day ended with YWC, Thambalkhong sealing the last 16 berth on a comprehensive 5-1 thrashing of YDO, Konjeng Lamdong with K Kiran scoring in the 40th, 53rd and 61st minutes and F Lalzarzo completing the rout with a brace (72nd, 90th).Haokam Killong scored the YDO consolation goal in the 81st minute.
Meanwhile, tournament sponsor Manipur State AIDS Control Society has raised prize money to Rs 1 lakh for the champions and Rs 50,000 for the runners-up.
