Salam Imocha, Special Judge of Fast Track Special Court number 1 Manipur on Friday sentenced convict Pukhrambam Somananda to 2 years of rigorous imprisonment.
He was convicted on June 25 for abducting a woman with the intent to compel her to marry him against her will.
Convict Somananda was produced before the Court today from Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa for sentence hearing.
The Special PP submitted that exemplary punishment should be awarded to the convict to send a message to the public that crime against women is a serious offence.
The defence counsel, on the other hand, submitted that the convict was only 23 during the time of the incident and prayed for minimum punishment.
The defence counsel also prayed to set off the period which the convict had already undergone during the investigation and trial of the case.
The Court, after hearing the Special PP and defence counsel, sentenced the convict to undergo rigorous imprisonment of 2 years.
A fine of Rs 1,000 was also imposed on the convict.
In default of payment of the fine, the convict has to undergo one more month of simple imprisonment, the Court said.
The case was on after the father of the victim lodged a complaint to Bishnupur women police station
on September 10, 2016 .
