Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh today inaugurated a water treatment plant inside the campus of Manipur University at Canchipur.
Constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 763.55 crores with funding from NLCPR, the newly inaugurated water treatment plant has the capacity of generating 6.81 million litre of water every day and it would meet the water requirement of people of five Assembly segments namely Thongju, Keirao, Langthabal, Singjamei and Naoriya Pakhanglakpa.
Construction of the water treatment plant the project of which was sanctioned on June 17, 2003 was started in January 2008 with the targeted due date of completion as February 29, 2009.The water treatment plant which was inaugurated today is part of the project of 'Augmentation of water supply for Imphal city Phase-I by utilising Leisangkhong moat at Canchipur and subsequent pumping from the confluence point of the Imphal and Iril rivers'.
Speaking at the occasion, the Chief Minister said Centre as well as the State Government have been special attention to ensure provisions of adequate safe drinking water and electricity to the people.
Stressing on the need for harvesting rain water in a State like Manipur where there is the problem of water scarcity, the Chief Minister informed that keeping this in mind the State Government has taken up steps to develop Leishang Hiden as a multipurpose project.
The problem of water scarcity in the State would be solved once the Thoubal Multipurpose Project is commissioned, the Chief Minister assured.
Presiding over the function, PHE Minister TN Haokip informed that similar water supply augmentation programmes have also been launched in the headquarters of all the districts in the State.
Regreting over failure of completing any developmental projects in time due to disturbance from various quarters, he also appealed to all concerned not to cause any disturbance in the developmental works of the people.
Langthabal A/C MLA O Joy and Thongju A/C MLA Bijoy Koijam were also present at the occasion.
