Imphal, February 07 2019:
Reacting sharply to Chief Minister N Biren's appeal to the people of Manipur to study the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) 2016 deeper and not to be swayed by emotion, MPCC president and CWC Member Gaikhangam has asked the Chief Minister if he is trying to befool the masses.
The CAB 2016 has been studied and analysed repeatedly by different sections of people including legal experts but the Chief Minister was speaking as if people have limited knowledge about the Bill, Gaikhangam remarked.
Speaking to media persons at his Babupara quarters today, Gaikhangam stated that the CAB 2016 is a Bill which will land the whole country in turmoil.
Asserting mat the Bill has all the potential to become not only a National issue but an international issue, Gaikhangam alleged that the Bill is an invitation for a third world war.
He went on to question the implications of the State Government's claim that the Bill would not harm the State notwithstanding the widespread protests and ever growing apprehension among the masses that the Bill will bring about disastrous impacts to all entire North East region including Manipur.
All the BJP leaders of the State who went to Delhi regarding the CAB 2016 must clarify to the public whether they support or oppose the Bill, Gaikhangam demanded.
The ongoing civil movement must be led by the BJP-led State Government.
Undermining the people's movement would prove to be very costly at the end, he warned.
Whereas the Congress party has been opposing the Bill since a long time back, BJP has been acting against the collective will and interest of the people, Gaikhangam decried.
He went on to claim that the NDA is unable to table the Bill in the Rajya Sabha on account of the strong pressure exerted by Congress and like minded parties.
Yet, there is a strong apprehension that the Bill might be tabled as a supplementary Bill any time, he continued.
There is no convention of tabling supplementary list in the Parliamentary practices of the country but BJP may promulgate the Bill in the form of an ordinance even after the Parliament session has been adjourned, Gaikhangam said.
A team of Congress leaders led by CLP leader and ex-Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has been camping at Delhi and they have been meeting many Opposition leaders, said the CWC Member adding that he too would leave for Delhi tomorrow.
He added that the people's movement against the Bill needs to be intensified more until and unless all the fears and apprehensions are put to rest.
