Imphal, June 01 2025:
Inner Manipur MP Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has written to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, requesting that the current flood situation in Manipur be declared a State calamity to mobilise appropriate resources and measures.
In the letter, Dr Bimol stated that such a declaration would enable the activation of institutional measures to effectively address the crisis and prepare for future challenges.
He added that declaring the flood situation a State calamity would facilitate inter-departmental coordination, resource mobilization, and urgent financial assistance from the Centre.
It would also unlock targeted schemes for relief, rehabilitation, infrastructure restoration, and preventive measures, the MP said.
Highlighting the recurrent nature of flooding in Manipur, Dr Bimol attributed it to factors like deforestation and policy lapses.
He pointed out that the current flood situation is especially alarming, given its early onset and extensive damage.
This, he warned, signals a likelihood of worsening conditions as the season progresses.
Given the Indian Meteorological Department's orange alert for continued heavy rainfall, it is evident that the current situation is just the beginning of a potentially prolonged and worsening monsoon season, he said and urged the Governor to immediately declare the current flood situation in Manipur as a State calamity.
