Imphal, February 16 2014:
A few days after a group of India Reserve Battalion (IRB) personnel led by Havildar Md Mujibur assaulted and injured journalist A Chaoba at the northern gate of Kangla Fort in Imphal, gunshots were fired at his residence last night around 7.45 at Thangmeiband Lourung Purel Leikai.
A Chaoba working as a reporter at Imphal Free Press (IFP), said some gunmen came in a car and fired two rounds of gunshots at his residence last night but he was not there at the moment.
In this connection, journalists will have a meeting tomorrow under the aegis of All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) at Manipur Press Club.
Meanwhile, Indian Journalists Union (IJU) has asked the Chief Minister of Manipur to award the severest form of punishment on the IRB personnel involved in the assault incident of A Chaoba.
A missive addressed to the Chief Minister in this count has reached AMWJU today but being a holiday today the letter will be submitted tomorrow.
In the strongly worded letter, IJU demanded that the severest action be given to the IRB personnel invloved and stern warning be used against such future incidents.
The IJU then demanded that the victim journalist be duly compensated and the media in Manipur be assured safety and security.
The Indian Journalists Union then said it views the attack on A Chaoba as an attack on the freedom of the press.
