Senapati, September 07 2023:
The All Naga Students Association, Manipur (ANSAM) has appealed to the State Government to restore internet service in the State.
In a press communique, ANSAM stated that the State Government suspended the internet services on May 3 to prevent spread of rumour and circulation of photos, videos and comments on social media which could escalate the violence in Manipur.
Stating that it has been more than 120 days that the internet has been shut down in the State other than the conditional lifting for some broadband users and Government offices, ANSAM asked if the internet shutdown is being used as a tool to suppress information and control the narrative surrounding the events happening in Manipur.
ANSAM highlighted that the prolonged internet shutdown has adversely affected communication while accessing emergency services, education and health sectors among others.
Saying that internet is not merely a communication system but also a chosen platform for research and information, ANSAM continued that internet shutdown also has serious implications for the entire population.
ANSAM appealed to the State Government to restore internet service by whitelisting accessible websites and allowing specific and verified social media websites/apps at specific geographical locations.
