"Good attitude, ethical practice, communication crucial for doctors"

JNIMS Director Dr L Usharani has categorically stated that attitude, ethics, and communication skills are crucial in medical studies to enable students to develop a professional relationship with patients and provide empathetic care.
Today, the 12th Annual Imphal Obstetrics & Gynaecological Society Conference was held under the theme "Healthy Women, Health Society" at the auditorium of JNIMS Hospital at Porompat, today.
In her address as chief guest, Dr Usharani stated that the controversies surrounding the unfortunate deaths of some patients at RIMS may have been due to multiple factors such as inadequate infrastructure, shortage of manpower and lapses in medical care, and hospital management among others.
Emphasizing that putting the entire blame on doctors would be unfair, she added that a thorough investigation is needed to address the issue.
She, nonetheless, stated that healthcare providers have been rendering ethical and professional services, upholding their duty to society.
Dr Usharani pointed out that prior to 2016, undergraduate medical courses lacked a formal syllabus on communication.
However, with the shift to competency-based medical education, essential components like ethics, attitude, and communication have been integrated into the curriculum, which she emphasized is crucial for medical professionals.
She added that medical practitioners must uphold strong ethical values, professional ethics and priorities empathetic patient care.
The Government also has a crucial role to play in ensuring better patient care, she said, noting that shortages in hospitals severely hinder care quality.
She emphasized the urgent need to address these issues, as public trust in Government hospitals is dwindling.
Dr Usharani, meanwhile, stated that prioritizing women's health is crucial for building a healthy society.
The programme was also attended by Medical Superintendent of JNIMS Dr Kh Lokeshwar, Managing Director of Maipakpi Hospital Dr Kh Tomba and Managing Director of Imphal Hospital Dr Ch Manglem among others.
