Salam Imocha, Judge of Fast track Special Court number 1 Manipur has sentenced a 65 year old convict to eight years of rigorous imprisonment under POCSO Act today.
Nongthombam Ramesh, s/o (L) Nodiya of Tera Loukrakpam Leikai Maibi Leirak was convicted on January 21 by the same Court under Section 6 of POCSO Act.
The convict appeared before the Court for sentence hearing along with his counsel.
Special PP T Bipinchandra submitted that the crime committed by the convict is punishable with rigorous imprisonment for not less than 10 years or life imprisonment.
The Special PP also submitted that the convict showed no leniency at the time of the incident.
On the other hand, the defence counsel submitted that the convict is an aged person suffering from various ailments.
The counsel prayed for a minimum sentence.
It was also submitted that the convict had already undergone one year and 10 months in judicial custody during the trial and investigation of the case.
The Court after hearing the submission of Special PP, the defence counsel sentenced the convict to eight years of rigorous imprisonment by setting off the period which the convict had already undergone in judicial custody.
The case was on against the convict after the mother of the victim lodged a complaint with the Imphal West women police station stating that her daughter was sexually assaulted by the convict in July 2019 .
