Tributes paid to heroes of Manipur

Imphal, October 02 2024: The Chahi Taret Khuntakpa and Maharaj Gambhir Singh Ningshingjaba Marup, Manipur observed the old ritual of langban tarpon heithoi katpa at the memorial complex of Maharaj Gambhir Singh at Langthabal Kunja today.

During the observance, the gathering paid floral tributes at the resting site of Maharaj Gambhir apart from offering tarpon and staying silent for two minutes in honour of the ancestors.

Speaking at the function, veteran politician O Joy said that the programme was organised to pay homage to Maharaj Gambhir Singh, his brother Nara Singh, prince Herachandra and other unsung heroes who fought and liberated Kangleipak from the Awas following the Chahi Taret Khuntakpa (1819-1826) .

He said that they also offered tributes in honour of all the people who have lost their lives in the course of the ongoing crisis which has been going on since May 3, 2023 .

Saying that the ongoing crisis in Manipur is similar to that of the genocidal campaign carried out by Awas during the period of Chahi Taret Khuntakpa, Joy maintained that Manipur wouldn't have existed today had Maharaj Gambhir Singh, Nara Singh, Herachandra and other unsung heroes not protected the erstwhile kingdom and driven out the Awas.

Joy continued that he is proud to be able to offer tributes to the bravehearts who defeated the Awas and passed on the legacy of Kangleipak.

Stating that younger generations need to understand the contribution of these patriots to the Manipur society, Joy maintained that an extensive lesson on the history of Manipur must be incorporated in school syllabus.

Remembering the patriots only once a year would not be able to instil a sense of patriotism to the younger folks, he added.

Former MLAs Dr Ng Bijoy, RK Anand, E Chand and president of All Manipur Women's Social Reformation & Development Samaj Th Ramani also attended the programme among others.
