Imphal, August 01 2025:
Imphal East Deputy Commissioner Dr Nivedita Lairenlakpam has appealed to the public to refrain from erecting structures in unauthorised places, cautioning that no encroachers will be spared.
She made the statement during a tree plantation programme held at the eco park set up at Heingang Hannaching, today.
The programme was organised by the Zonal Education Office Zone II, Imphal East in association with Imphal East district administration, Education (S)ZSamagra Shiksha Manipur and Central Forest Division.
At the function, Dr Nivedita said that the ongoing eviction drive in Imphal East is to remove illegal structures on river banks, roads, drains, etc, and this effort will continue.
Stating that the eviction drive is being carried out after consulting the local clubs, she added that all structures in Imphal East built through encroachment will be evicted gradually although some areas might not be initially included in the eviction schedule.
She appealed to the public to stop the habit of building unauthorized house extensions, sheds, or other structures, clarifying that the eviction drive is not for personal gain.
To a query, the Deputy Commissioner stated that the Government aims to resettle all internally displaced people (IDPs) in Imphal East by December 2025.Mentioning that the disbursement of funds for constructing houses for IDPs under the Permanent Housing Scheme has been completed in some areas, she added the Government will disburse the funds for sensitive interior villages after constructing accommodations for security personnel first.
Resettling the residents of Ekou may take some time due to the situation in the village, she said, adding that the Government is nonetheless working to resettle all IDPs by December in a phased manner.
General secretary of Heingang Kontha Makha Model Club S Tondang said that the Hannaching was once barren but collective efforts by many people have transformed the hill into a lush and green area again.
While the initiative to rejuvenate the hill was initially undertaken by local youths, the Forest department has since extended its support, and a Joint Forest Management committee has been formed, he said.
DFO of Central Forest Division Vikram Suresh Nadhe also attended the programme among others.
