Imphal, February 08, 2011:
The spastic Society of Manipur has called upon physically challenged people or persons with disabilities/deformities and their family/elders to extend full cooperation to officials and personnel involved in the Census 2011 exercise.
Speaking to news-persons at Manipur Press Club today, the Society's secretary Laishram Tokendra Ricky made a fervent appeal to individuals with disabilities and their family members to share all relevant information to Census Supervisors and Enumerators during the home-to-home exercise this month.
Stating that correct and detailed report on population of physically or mentally challenged section of the society is an important criteria on which budgetary allocations depend on, he also highlighted that when the previous Census exercise was conducted in 2001 officials involved in the exercise not only failed to collect precise information but also merely clustered physically or mentally challenged persons as 'others'.
The practice, however, will not be repeated this time around as the Census Report 2011 will enlist individuals with visual, hearing, speech, movement or mental disabilities, he maintained.
Speaking at the occasion, senior journalist K Madhumangol informed that to ensure coverage during the ongoing Census Report, National Centre for Promotion of Employment for disabled People had already approached authorities concerned with the effort getting the approval from none other than the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India Dr C Chandramouli.
Madhumangol also suggested that aged persons with visual or hearing impairment and having mobility problems should also be considered and included in the Census Report 2011 as they too face problems similar to persons with disabilities.
It is also informed that after revision, number of category of disabilities has been increased to eight from five while process is on to include mental retardation and mental illness under disability group.
