'Must win against poppy planters'

Imphal, January 19 2023: Chief Minister N Biren has vowed that the Government will not let the poppy planters harvest a single grain of poppy.

Speaking to media persons today, the Chief Minister said that the Government is determined to win the battle against poppy planters.

As some people are determined to carry on the poppy plantation, the Government is also equally determined to wipe it out, Biren asserted.

The Government may face whatever challenges and odds in its battle against poppy plantation but it will never retract its steps, he said.

"No one will be let free scot-free irrespective of whether they are my wife, sons, mother or police if they are arrested in connection with drug cases", he stated.

Some areas of Saikul, western ranges of Koubru hills, western ranges of Thangjing hills, Sajik Tampak areas and some areas of Kamjong where there is poppy plantation have been identified.

Spraying of herbicide has been started at these places using three drones to destroy the poppy plants.

Withering and death of poppy plants are now visible, he said.

Informing that the Government has placed an order for 60 drones which would be used in agriculture related activities, Biren said that the Government has been planning to spray tree seeds using drones after March with the onset of rainy season.

He said that a team of NCB has arrived in the State to destroy poppy plantations.

He further informed that stronger actions have been initiated after forming joint teams of Forest officials, Assam Rifles, BSF and State forces.
