Ukhrul, September 16, 2010: Demanding the Government to issue joining reports to the selected Manipur Police Constable (drivers/despatch riders), members of Manipur Police Constable (Driver/Despatch Riders) Welfare Association took out a protest march here today.

Along with the protest march, they were also planning to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister in connection with their demand and were proceeding towards the Chief Minister's bungalow when security personnel stopped them in front of Manipur Police Headquarters and pushed them back till Hicham Yaichampat.

Thus, the protestors could not submit the memorandum.

The Government of Manipur had issued an order on November 6, 2009 confirming selection of 1505 Manipur Police Constable (Drivers/Despatch Riders).

But the joining reports have not yet been provided to the selected candidates even after more than 10 months.

All the 1505 selected candidates gathered at MDU Hall, Yaiskul Police Lane today morning and later decided to take out a protest march and submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister highlighting their grievances and the demand for issuing joining reports.

Talking to mediapersons on the sidelines of the protest march, secretary of Manipur Police Constable (Drivers/Despatch Riders) Welfare Association, Sanjit said that denial of joining reports and training facility even after more than 10 months of selection is condemnable.

Such conduct of the Government tantamounts to depriving the rights to life of the people who are trying to eke out a living in irrespective of the posts in they are selected.

Denouncing the conduct of the security personnel who prevented them submitting their memorandum to the Chief Minister, Sanjit informed that a special meeting of the Association would be convened on Sunday to discuss the further course of action to be taken up in pursuance of their demands.

One of the selected constables said that as there is no possibility for selection in any Government post without paying money these days, he had mortgaged his properties and borrowed money from others to arrange the amount.

Though he was lucky to be selected, no joining report has been given and no training provided.

In such a situation, how can one think of police constable to remain fair in the performance of their duties, he questioned.
