Imphal, August 15: The 86 Bn CRPF with its headquarters at Lamphel and which was recently inducted in the State during the annual change-over, 2008 celebrated Independence Day with pomp and ceremony.

In a statement, the Commandant of the Bn, Shankar Lal Sengupta said that after the National flag was hoisted at Sehjang under Senapati police along NH-39 addressed the gathering.

In his address, the Commandant said that the CRPF and other security agencies will continue with the efforts to maintain peace.

About 40 to 50 villagers along with the chief of Sehjang village, Hentinsheh attended the flag hoisting ceremony.

The Commandant also distributed sweets to the children of the Sehjang and neighbouring villages as well as Tupul of Tamenglong district.

A football tournament was also organised to mark the day, said the statement and added that teams from the 86 CRPF, Tupul Youth Club, Takomjang and Choroipondonga participated in the meet.

The final was played between the Tamkojang team and the 86 CRPF where Tamkojang emerged winner.

Kenny of Tamkojang was adjudged the best scorer of the meet.

In the evening a cultural programme was also organised by the jawans of 86 CRPF at Sehjang post which was attended by a large number of villagers.

To commemorate 62nd years of independence, all units, Sector headquarters under HQ IGAR (South) also organised the Independence Day celebration at their respectie locations.

The event commenced with hoisting of National flag at each place followed by singing of National Anthem, PRO Assam Rifles said in a statement, adding that this auspicious event was aimed at inducting local youths into Indian mainstream and encouraging them to celebrate Independence Day and begin to live a life of freedom denouncing insurgency.

The celebration was a momentous occasion in the history of Chandel district as it was for the first time that the National flag was unfurled and the National Anthem reverbated in many remote areas of the district, the PRO said, adding that for the first time large number of people came out to salute the National flag at Samtal Salient at Sejlon, Chanjal, Tuitong and Old Samtal after 10 years iof living under militants.

In almost, all places, the celebration had cultural programme, sports competition, drawing and quiz competion an band disply marking the event.

6th Assam Rifles organised also Independence Day celebration at Chakpikarong.

Chakpikarong SDO Darsinso hoisted the tri-colour in the function, said a press release of Anal Naga Students' Union.

The students' union has also expressed gratitude to Assam Rifles for bringing the celebration to the village.

It also expressed thanks to AR for giving assistance in various ways to the villagers.
